About our Directory

Making plastic-free funeral flowers easy to find

The Farewell Flowers Directory is a not-for-profit launched in May 2024 by Gill Hodgson (Fieldhouse Flowers, Yorkshire) and Carole Patilla (Tuckshop Flowers, Birmingham). Their aim was to make it easy for people to find funeral flowers made without plastics and floral foam. As funeral florists, they’ve both been passionate advocates for foam-free funeral flowers for many years. Between them they have educated hundreds of florists about foam-free techniques and have promoted an approach to funeral flowers which starts with a conversation and ends with a unique and personalised floral tribute that ‘feels right’ for the person it is celebrating.

Every creative florist listed on the Directory wants to offer you a personal choice that’s not restricted by fixed designs, and makes it easy for you to find farewell flowers that fit.

Raising the profile of funeral flowers

The Farewell Flowers Directory aims to bring discussions about funeral flowers into the public realm.

By asking our florists to highlight compostable designs on their websites, the Directory encourages us to think about how we can move away from using plastic-derived foam for the majority of floral tributes seen in crematoria and cemeteries across the country.

Working with the funeral industry

The Farewell Flowers Directory welcomes opportunities to work with all sectors of the funeral industry and has provided speakers for the conferences of The Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management and for The Association of Green Funeral Directors.

Promoting naturally beautiful, plastic-free funeral flowers

Through our Farewell Florist team photoshoots and our displays at flower shows and events around the UK, we want you to see just how beautiful funeral flowers can be, and the huge range of choices which are open to you. We want to inspire and spark conversations about your ideas for flowers and to encourage more open discussions around funeral wishes in the widest sense. We think that talking about these issues gives us all more choice, and also more power to take control over how we say goodbye and the environmental legacy we leave.

We’ll help you find uniquely lovely funeral flowers, made with nature and people at their heart.

If you’d like to support our work and help us to take our ground-breaking funeral flowers display to RHS Chelsea 2025 you can give online below.

We’re grateful for all your support and can’t wait to tell you more about our plans!

What are ‘funeral flowers’?

Funeral flowers can be anything you want them to be, but the language used to describe them can be a little confusing if you’re not a florist. To help you discuss different styles of funeral flowers with florists, we’ve made a quick guide to some of the most popular choices.

Why choose plastic-free funeral flowers?

It’s estimated that every year, over 14,670 cubic metres of floral foam and single use plastic are sent to landfill from crematoriums across the UK. That’s the equivalent of 6 Olympic swimming pools.

The Farewell Flowers Directory is proud to be an associate member of the Association of Green Funeral Directors
